Eggs, Jams, and look for produce throughout the summer. About Us We strive to reduce, reuse, and recycle at Solstice Dawn. Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) At Solstice Dawn, we are currently all-natural yet use many organic practices. We are implementing permaculture into the way we produce food and medicinals and infuse beauty into our lives. Our gardens use techniques and practices that combine the best of wildlife gardening, edible landscaping, and native-plant cultivation into a low-maintenance, self-contained, and productive ecosystem, which includes edible gardening, companion planting, raised beds, vertical gardening, and composting. Heirloom vegetables, herbs, perennials, and edible flowers are grown together. Vertical gardening practices, which include growing plants on trellises and in hanging baskets, meet up with companion plantings that help keep insect and other pest problems to a minimum. Since our gardens are small in size with every piece of available gardening space used, they require less maintenance and readily welcome beneficial insects. There is never any need for pesticides on our acreage. We, at Solstice Dawn gardens, produce food by synergistically growing a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Flowers are not only grown for their edible or medicinal properties but also for use as cut flowers. Since perennials have deeper root systems and can, therefore, tap into the moisture and minerals needed from deep beneath the ground, these plants do not require as much water or fertilizer as other plants, such as annuals. Also, perennials are around throughout the year offering shelter to wildlife. Soil is always important and great care is given to our soil mixture. Worms are essential in our gardens. They help keep soil loose and healthy. A good soil structure consists of a large population of earthworms and a natural balance of beneficial insects. Compost piles are another important element in Solstice Dawn gardens wherein all materials for fertilizing and mulching are derived from vegetable scraps, natural manures, and decomposed organic matter. Nothing within our gardens is ever wasted. Garden waste is used for composting, which in turn, is used for soil amendment and fertilizer. Water is also an important element. Not only does water keep the soil and plants hydrated, but it is also used to attract wildlife. Every year we add more permaculture designs and features to our gardens at Solstice Dawn. As Samuel Smiles says, “Great results cannot be achieved at once; so we must be satisfied to advance in life as we walk - step by step.” Additional Information All efforts are made to increase sustainable levels in terms of energy, water, and materials usage.
