About Gerdes Heritage Fowl:
Gerdes Heritage Fowl began in July, 2014 in response to demand in our local farmers market for locally raised eggs. My eggs have also been introduced into a local store that was experiencing excess demand for free-range only eggs. Our mission is to provide chicken and duck eggs that are produced in ethically pure fashion, or as my grandmother would say "how we used to raise them."
General Practices:
These birds never spend time confined in cages. They are allowed to range freely un-penned from morning until they let themselves in at sun down. Even then, they are allowed to mosey on out into their run for some fresh air, if they so choose, in the middle of the night (weather permitting). I raise some of America's oldest chicken breeds that were bred for maximum foraging capabilities and short combs and waddles so as to avoid discomfort and pain in the cold winter months.
Highlights:
This month the hennies & roos have been feasting on leftover pumpkins, and let me tell you.. they love 'em!!
