Product Types:
Grass-finished beef, pastured chicken, free-range eggs, raw unfiltered honey and herbs. About Us We moved from Nevada to a 40 acre farm in 2002. Our only intention of farming was to grow some of our own food. Two years later we were selling chickens, eggs and a little milk from our one Jersey cow. We now raise broilers all summer, are sold out of eggs most weeks, occassionaly have hogs, work with neighboring farmers to sell beef and honey and sell milk from our herd of 12 Jersey cows. In 2010 we sold 25 acres and now farm the remaining 15 acres. We love to grow good food and our customers love to eat (and drink) it too! Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We are a grass-based family farm which means our animals spend most if not all their time on pasture. Grasses and forbs are a regular part of their diet. We try to create a natural setting for our animals, and therefore, they are not confined to yards or pens. We strive to raise our animals so their impact compliments each other on the farm. We use no chemical herbicides or pesticides on the farm. There is a limited use of natural fly sprays on the dairy cattle. An effort is made to limit the build-up of manures and to promote composting of manures by adding carbon materials such as wood chips or dead leaves. We do not use antibiotics, hormones, or steroids in our feed. A judicial use of antibiotics is used on a dairy cow with a bacterial condition in their udder (mastitis). And then it is only administered to the specific quarter affected and the milk is not saved until the antibiotic is no longer present in the cows system (typically 3-5 days). Beef cattle are grass fed and finished. Alfalfa and grass hay are fed in the winter. Most of the hay is grown on the farm. They are rotated to fresh pasture on a regular basis. Dairy cattle are fed the same as the beef cattle. The only grain they are given is at milking time. This is more of an incentive to get them to the barn than as a feed source. Our broiler meat chickens are brooded inside until they are feathered out (3-4 weeks) and then they are moved outside into bottomless pens on our pasture. The pens have fresh organic feed and water and are moved daily to provide fresh grasses and bugs to eat also. Our eggs are from laying hens fed organic grains and are provided complete access to roam the entire farm. Hogs are contained with a hot wire to a portion of our pasture or area on the farm that we wish to roto-till. They eat the grains and use their natural instincts to root out vegetation in their area. Honey is collected in the late summer from hives in the West Point area and poured unfiltered into containers for storage. The honey is from the local clovers, alfalfa and wild flowers in our area. Additional Information We firmly believe the consumer needs to know where his food comes from and how it was grown. To this end we make every effort to educate customers on our farm practices. We want to get to know the people who eat our food. We give farm tours and are available to give talks to groups on our farming practices. We are working at becoming more community supported which means we would like our customers to become part of the farming operation. You will notice we offer deposits for some of our products. This not only holds product for the customer but it greatly reduces the financial burden of operating a farm. Thousands of dollars must be put up front when you are raising animals or food crops and then the farmers must wait until the end of the season to realize a profit. We also encourage customers to come to the farm and help work on projects or improvents that are needed. This is a great way to get in touch with the earth and to really understand what goes into growing good honest food. |
