Belonging to some prior time Our farm name reflects our commitment to a more old fashioned approach to agriculture. With the advent of BT Corn, Round-Up Ready Soybeans, GPS auto steer and intensive high tech... everything...it was time for a change. Through this change we recognize the management skills we use that may have otherwise been lost. Whether it's organic crops or livestock raised outdoors without antibiotics the system is intensively simple, but rewarding. We feel the production difficulties we encounter at times are well worth the quality of the end products. The patience and diligence is a huge part of the give and take of farming alongside nature. Erstwhile Farm certainly suffers from "progressive regression". LOL Give us a try. Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients No GMO feeds are used on our farm. Certified organic small grains have been fed now pretty regularly, using organic oats, organic popcorn, organic peas and organic barley. We strive to rotate our livestock to various grazing areas on our farm. This includes gleaning crop ground, grazing sowed rye, pasture ground, as well as just plain weedy areas. I have some sows, one in particular, who look for that occasional "treat" of a broken egg to eat out of my hand! ...I've named my new sow friend "omlet". Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Our grain crops are certified organic. Although our fruits and vegetables are not certified, we follow organic practices. Livestock is best described as antibiotic free, natural. All livestock lives their entire lives outdoors, with shelter and bedding available at will. Additional Information Our hog herd can be best described as a composite breed. We use a mix of Hampshire, Yorkshire, Spotted Poland-China & Duroc. This is the type of hog that was raised by small farmers in the 50's, sometimes referred to as "Farmers Hybrid". It is not the type of hog that was bred for lower back-fat. Since we farrow to finish throughout all seasons, with all outdoor production, we have saved our own gilts and developed a herd that carries more fat (flavor), and does very well in this outdoor system. We are one of very few Nebraska farmers who raise TRULY OUTDOOR pigs from birth to butcher weight. Pigs are smart animals and learn to respect an electric fence just inches off the ground. This, for the most part, is what designates their acres of "playground" on our farm. Highlights this Month PIGS - Have been moved to the corn stubble to graze. They are lovin' it! Check out our *SPECIAL* this cycle - Ground Pork - A great "do anything" meat...soup, burger, casserole, meatloaf, burrito......etc! CHICKENS - My hens are slowing down with the cooler weather!
