About Us
Bluestem Farms is a third generation family farm owned and operated by Kim and Kathy Timperley of rural Madison, NE. This Stanton County farm was originally purchased by Kims grandfather, Judson Timperley, in 1908. Kim and Kathy purchased the farm from Kims father, Lyle, in 2000 and have built it into Bluestem Farms, raising naturally grown produce. The name refers to the native grasses that still grow wild on our farm.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
Obviously, chemical fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides are not used on Bluestem Farms. Although the farm is not certified organic, steps are being taken to certify the hoophouses and possibly the field gardens as well.Crops are fertilized, when soil tests indicate the necessity, by organic soil amendments as well as fish and kelp emulsions. Birds, beneficial insects, trap crops, and when needed, organic repellents are used to control insect pests. Crops within the hoop-houses occasionally need organic fungicides to control blights. Weeds are controlled mechanically, manually, and by plastic mulches. All weights are accurate since our scales are checked and certified by the Nebraska Department of Weights and Measures annually.

Additional Information
Our goal is to create a sustainably managed farm, not only to save the family farm, but also to show neighbors and other interested growers that agriculture doesnt have to follow the path of factory farms and mega-agribusiness operations.

One of our favorite baking squashes, it's easy to slice into halves and fill with butter. A small acorn squash weighs from 1 to 3 pounds, and has sweet, slightly fibrous flesh. Its distinct ribs run the length of its hard, blackish-green, often with a yellow or orange ground spot (where it touched ground).

Has a sweet and creamy orange flesh. This squash is much sweeter than other winter varieties. Buttercup squash can be baked, mashed, pureed, steamed, simmered, or stuffed and can replace sweet potatoes in most recipes. Buttercup is less stringy than other squashes

#3034 spaghetti squash
Order number of items. You will be billed for exact weight (approx. 3 - 6 pounds) (also called vegetable spaghetti, vegetable marrow, or noodle squash) - A small, watermelon-shaped variety, ranges in size from 2 to 5 pounds or more. It has a golden-yellow, oval rind and a mild, nutlike flavor. When cooked, the flesh separates in strands that resemble spaghetti pasta. To prepare spaghetti squash, cut the gourd in half lengthwise and remove the seeds, then bake or boil it until tender. Or, wrap it in plastic wrap and microwave on high for 10 to 12 minutes. Once cooked, use a fork to rake out the "spaghetti-like" stringy flesh (all the way to the rind), and serve. Spaghetti squash can be stored at room temperature for about a month. After cutting, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 2 days. Spaghetti squash also freezes well.
All Natural $1.00/pound
